Marble sculpture and wood carving collections on Mount Athos contain a large number of artefacts dating from the Byzantine and post-Byzantine period.
The collection contains marble sculptures, figurines, vases, sarcophagus and other works from the Byzantine period, the decoration of which represents the main trends developed in the workshops of Constantinople, as well as of several significant artistic centers of the Empire. The collection of post-Byzantine marble sculpture contains tiles, porticoes, fountains, pilgrimages etc., created by workshops in mainland Greece, Chios, Tinos, as well as Constantinople.
For the most part, the wood carvings surviving in Mount Athos are dating from the 16th to the early 20th centuries. Crafted by craftsmen from Crete, continental Greece, the northern Aegean region, as well as by monks wood sculptors, these works are mostly pilgrimages, verges, shutters, picture frames etc.
